Programs
Hayfork for Open Source
Free search for the documentation of open-source projects. Hayfork crawls your published docs and gives visitors a search box that finds the page they mean, whether they type its name, like std::vector, or a question, like "check if a key exists in a map". You keep the "Search by Hayfork" link in the search dialog, and we cover the rest.
What you get
Search by name and by meaning
Every query matches exact words and meaning together, so API names, error messages and plain-language questions all find the right page and section.
Docusaurus theme or one script tag
The Docusaurus theme fills the navbar search slot. Any other site adds the search widget with one tag. Both open a ⌘K dialog.
No index to build
Hayfork reads your published site through its sitemap and re-crawls it every week, or every day if you choose. There is no crawler config to write, no index upload in CI, and nothing to host.
Ready for AI agents
The same index answers agents through the retrieve endpoint and the MCP server, so Claude, Cursor and VS Code can cite your docs.
Who can apply
- Documentation of an open-source project, published under an OSI-approved license, or a non-commercial technical community site such as a language reference or tutorial site.
- Publicly reachable and in use: not a placeholder or a site still being built.
- Technical content. Marketing sites and online shops are not part of the program.
- Up to 5,000 pages. Most project docs fit with room to spare.
Docs of a commercial product are welcome on the Free and Team plans. If your project is open source and backed by a company, apply and tell us; we decide those case by case.

What we ask in return
- Keep the "Search by Hayfork" link visible in the search dialog. It is how other projects find us, and it pays for the program.
- Keep the site within the criteria above. If it stops qualifying, we will tell you and move the workspace to the Free plan, without deleting anything.
How to apply
-
Add your docs on the Free plan
Create a workspace, add your docs address as a website source, and try your own queries in the search playground. The Free plan already holds 5,000 pages, so you can see the results before you apply.
-
Send us your project
Email bhanu.sengar@hayfork.dev with the project name, the repository, the docs address and the email you signed up with. We reply within two business days and move your workspace to the Open Source plan.
-
Add the search box
Create a website key for your docs address and add the Docusaurus theme or the widget. Your docs are re-crawled weekly from then on, and only changed pages are re-indexed. To refresh straight after a release, press Sync or post to
/crawlfrom your deploy job. See Keeping a source current.
Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no card on file and no trial that ends. The plan stays free as long as the site qualifies.
What if we outgrow the limits?
Write to us before you do. For a project that needs more pages or searches, we would rather raise the limit than turn the search box off.
We use Algolia DocSearch. Can we switch?
Yes, and there is nothing to export. Hayfork reads your published pages directly. Moving from Algolia DocSearch lists the config lines to remove.
Can we leave later?
Remove the theme or the script tag and delete the workspace. Your docs stay where they are; Hayfork only holds a copy for searching.
